Reflect back on your learning journey and identify in your mind one of the best teachers you ever had. 

What 2-3 topics discussed in Chapter 4 of Educational Psychology was that teacher exceptional at deploying or practicing?

  4. My favorite teacher was our GT teacher from middle school. And I think that I really enjoyed her class because it was a GT class we did have the oppertunity to be more creative and abstract. She also recognized the aspect of multiple intellagences. For example most of my friends who were also in the class have gone on to be engenieers and were extremelly talented in math construction. I on the other hand was good at the living sciences. She encouraged and embraced both with out preference over another.

  5. My best teacher was Mrs. Radke in 5th grade. She taught us the alphabet in sign language and talked to us about people who had disabilities. This was a very good lesson for me about people who have disabilities. She would also mainstream kids and then integrate lower learning kids into our groups as she saw fit. She encouraged peer teaching and learning. A teacher beyond her time as I was in the %th grade back in 1975.

  6. One of the best teachers I have had is coach Todd Duncan. While coaching together for several years and through a continuing friendship Coach D has taught me a lot about basketball and a whole lot more about leading by example. The two topics from chapter 3 that I can immediately identify with him are moral development and physical development. Coaching is competitive but I learned from Coach D about being true to one’s self first and using that accountability to challenge and motivate a team. I don’t know of anyone who could accuse him of not being a person of his word. His teams break out of every huddle with a yell of “3:23!”; a reminder of Colossians 3:23 where Paul implores to do whatever we do with our whole heart as if doing it unto the Lord. As for physical development, I saw players improve by vast amounts when they were in Coach D’s program and former players that I keep in touch with are grateful for how they were challenged to be their best every day.

  7. Well, one of the best teachers I ever had was an English teacher. I was not the most interested or studious student in English my Freshman year of High School. She was a an older instructor, very formal, from Mississippi, but had absolutely no accent (by choice). She was well published, and developed an entire curriculum and text book that was adopted by the entire district. Through her use of what I perceive now as the triarchic theory of successful intelligence and automacity, I was able to become proficient in the subject and even enjoy English. I even took extra courses as electives to help prepare for college. Mrs. Pratt

  9. One of the best teachers I had was exceptional at helping students with learning disabilities. Her patience, understanding and dedication to making students with this disability fit in and contribute was amazing. Praise and acknowledgment of a job well done lifted these students to do/learn things they might not have accomplished with a less patient teacher. This same teacher was also a pro with the hyperactivity child. She would let the student move about in the room by developing activities that involved moving from station to station in the classroom environment. When it came time to test, she would isolate the student so they would not be distracted. She would also discuss with the student ways in which they could work to control some of their actions.

  10. The chapter deals mostly with exceptional students and how to adjust instruction accordingly regardless of where the students fall on the "ability spectrum". My favorite teacher did a fantastic job of treating each of us exactly the same. She avoided placing any added attention on the better performing students. She hated labels whether good, bad or ugly, and verbalized this to the class. She didn't want to put anyone in a mindset that they either felt they had to live up to or felt they could never break free of. This particular teacher also did a great job of going above and beyond to get us extra help whether it was extra tutoring if we were struggling or pushing us to the next level if we needed a challenge. She had a unique way of challenging us without swamping us with homework. The book suggests that teachers not "destroy intrinsic motivation" and this teacher could easily draw the line to allow us to enjoy learning while still being challenged.

  13. I don’t remember very much my teachers dealing with children with disabilities, or if we had one in our class. Since the reality in Brazil is a lot different than here, I remember my teachers dealing with students who live in poverty and go to school without breakfast (the schools do not provide breakfast), or didn’t have their uniforms. Then, they would do a lot of fundraising to raise money and provide these kids the minimal conditions for learning such as food, their uniforms, and supplies. Hopefully, the reality now is different from those times.

    I guess they didn't teach me memory skills

  15. I don't think Mrs. Pratt considered it the triachic theory or the tertiary, automacity. I think it was more, intuitive teaching on her part.

We have a teacher at MHS that got tired of dealing with so many hyperactive students .... falling out of their desk, dropping books, going to the pencil sharpener every 2 seconds... that he removed all the desks from his classroom. Students are on their feet 95% of the 50 minute class period. Students were shocked when they first saw this arrangement, but it has proven to be a huge success. The kids love it!

  18. The best teacher I had was our librian. She would help out all the student with reading problems and help them understand what was being red. She helped the ESL student, emotional and bahavioral problem students.

  19. My High School Geography class at Post High School was excellent when identifying and teaching to gifted and talented students. He was a very intelligent interesting teacher. He taught well to those who were not as intelligent, but they tended to not like him. He went well beyond for the gifted students and challenged them in many ways. I think most teachers teach their one way and make some modifications for the slower students, but do not make modifications for the gifted. This teacher would go as far as planning field trips for the g/t students and provoke their learning and development.
